Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
The third performance of "Tannh?user" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was attended by a large and warmly-appreciative audience. Herr Alvary made his first appearance in this city in the title r?le. His voice showed some signs of his recent illness and occasionally he seemed to sing with effort. Nevertheless his work was creditable. He sang the music generally with accuracy and with judgment; but it was in his acting that he did not quite meet the demands of the part.
He did not display any of that intensity of feeling which is inseparable from a forcible interpretation of this splendid character. We have become so accustomed, however, to seeing Herr Alvary build up a part at each successive performance that it is only fair to him to defer more extended comment until he shall have elaborated his Tannh?user. The remainder of the cast was the same as at the Saturday matin?e. Tomorrow evening those who love the old-fashioned Italian opera will have a chance to listen to the familiar strains of Verdi's "Il Trovatore."
