Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
The third performance of Wagner's music-drama "Siegfried," was given at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening. The house was well filled with an extremely attentive and appreciative audience. The custom of silence during the progress of the performance was observed, but at the end of each act the applause was loud and long. There was nothing new to note in last evening's proceedings save that the general symmetry of the presentation was increased by smoothness in detail. Repetition does not materially alter the impressions made by the first hearing of this notable work. The merits of the music-drama as well as its defects were then commented on at length, and it is unnecessary to devote much space to them now. The performance last evening showed a perceptible improvement in balance and directness of effort, thought it lacked some of the impulse and enthusiasm which are inseparable from a first night. Herr Alvary's interpretation of the title r?le deservedly gains in public favor, and Herr Ferency has imparted a greater significance to the grotesque aspects of his part. Herr Fischer was not in good voice last night, but he sang Wotan with his dignity of style. Fr?ulein Lilli Lehmann repeated her noble impersonation of Br?nnhilde, while Herr von Milde, Herr Elmblad, and Fr?ulein Brandt again filled their former r?les. There was a noticeable improvement in the delicacy of the orchestral work, and Herr Seidl deserves praise for an especially intelligent reading of the score in the "Waldweben" episode.
