Review 1:
Review of W. J. Henderson, The New York Times:
In noting that the most recent revival of "Aida" in New York is marked by unprecedented liberality and taste in all that concerns its scenic needs, it will be readily understood that the management's determination to assign the score a place of honor in the current repertoire is the outgrowth of a sincere desire to make its stock in trade as varied as possible. It was evident, however, from last evening's performance that different conductorship and, in some instances, different singers must be had if Italian opera, pure and simple, is to be sung with German words at the Metropolitan. Many of the most beautiful and striking passages lost all their effect through the unconscionable dragging of the tempos by Herr Seidl, many symmetrical and melodic strains were drawn out of shape by a tendency to excessive emphasis on the part of the performers, and in the labors of almost all the artists there was discerned a want of refinement in feeling and expression.
