Review 1:
Review in The Evening Telegraph
A full, though not crowded, audience attended the Metropolitan Opera House last evening for the purpose of enjoying another rendering of "The Huguenots." The cast was the same as upon the two last occasions, and there was no essential change perceptible in the interpretation of the different roles. Again the extreme conscientiousness and thoroughness of Dr. Damrosch as a musical leader were conspicuous and, again, did Frau Schroeder-Hanfstaengl reveal herself as a singer and actress of extraordinary skill. Frau Materna needs no new opportunity to establish herself as a glorious cantatrice and an impassioned artist, one of the few who retain in maturity the fire of youth, blending, in as nearly perfect proportions as they can well be blended, the animation and vigor that belong to a rising star with the mellowness and judgment characteristic of one that has long shone in the zenith. The introductory aria arranged for Urban was charmingly given by Fraulein Slach, and the final duo between Valentina (Frau Materna) and Raoul (Herr Schott) was rendered with an abandon and tenderness which are seldom heard and seen united in such symmetrical proportions. The pictorial part of the opera likewise received due attention. Tomorrow night "Le Proph?te" will be given; and on Friday evening Frau Schroeder-Hanfstaengl will make her final appearance, "La Juive" having been selected for that occasion.
