Review 1:
Review in The New York Times:
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE
The concert given at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was in many respects the most interesting of the series. Rossini's "Stabat Mater" was the feature of the programme, and, though it was found advisable to shorten it by the omission of the quartet, "Sancta mater," the remainder of the work was given in a manner that showed evidences of careful preparation. The soloists in this work were Mmes. Valleria and Scalchi and Signori Stagno and Novara. The melodious duet, "Quis est homo," was treated in a beautiful manner by the two ladies, who sang it with rare taste. Mme. Valleria sang the "Inflamatus" in a charming style, and Mme.
Sealchi gave a noble rendering of the "Fac ut portem." Signor Novara was excellent in his interpretation of the "Eia mater." The chorus was heard to great advantage in this composition, its work being smooth, precise, and well shaded. In the second part of the concert a miscellaneous list of songs was given. M. Caponi gave an emotional performance of Proch's "Ave Maria" accompanied by Signor Ciofi on the violin, Mme. Maretzek at the harp, and Signor Azzoni at the organ. Signor Kaschmann sang the romanza "O tu che," from "Tannh?user" with excellent taste and finish, and Mlle. Louise Lablaehe acceptably rendered the "Fanciulle che il core," from "Dinorah." Signor Vergara sang Faure's "Les Rameaux," and Mlle. Lablache, M. Caponi and Signor Augier, Signor Novara, and the chorus gave a fine performance of the finale?"O sommo Carlo," from "Ernani."
