Review 1:
Review in The New York Times:
The performance of "Faust" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was witnessed by a very large, brilliant, and enthusiastic audience, The entertainment was in every way worthy of the attention bestowed upon it. Mme. Nilsson's voice was in excellent condition and she sang with great sweetness and sentiment. Her "Re di Thule" was an exquisitely pure performance, while the jewel song was given with her usual charming effect. Signor Campanini, who was plainly suffering from his wounded foot, nevertheless sang and acted with a tender grace and poetic passion that thoroughly moved the audience. Throughout the opera, and particularly in the garden scene, he was admirable. Mme. Scalchi's Siebel was the same artistic impersonation that has been before seen, while Signor Del Puente gave the music of Valentino unusual prominence, and Signor Novara was a picturesque Mephistopheles. A word of praise is due to Mme. Lablache for her excellent performance of Martha. The chorus was in good form, and the orchestra, under Signor Vianesi's caring hand, gave commendable treatment to the score.
